In the next few days, I’m switching off my Instagram and Facebook accounts completely. It’s a fact and not one I’m trying to convey as if I’m some kind of influencer who will be missed.
I’m not doing it for attention (although writing this post inherently calls that claim into question). No, I’m doing it for a multitude of reasons and I’m sure anyone reading this could relate to at least one on my list.
The broadstrokes?
I’m wasting too much time on these apps
I don’t feel closer to the people I follow
My feed has been blatantly pushed toward the doom-scroll black hole (this frog has finally decided to leap out of the boiling pot)
Legacy social media no longer fuels my creativity
So, where can you find me?
Here on Substack, whether you have your own account or subscribe for free via your email. This page will become a journal of sorts where I’ll share random updates I might have formerly shared elsewhere.
You can friend me on Fable and/or Letterboxd, username: sir_craigory on both, if you’d like to keep up with what I’m reading and watching (and some little insipid thoughts about said books and movies)
If I know you personally, send me a message here to get my email/phone number. I’m going to break the millennial stereotype and let you know I’m not afraid of most phone calls/texts/emails.
In fact, I’m looking to enter a new phase of life where personal connection gets back to being deeper than a casual heart on a photo carousel with a pithy caption.
This post might not be long for this site, but I wanted this update to live somewhere temporarily (and I needed an actual first post because my line of work leads to the habit of writing for others and being too tapped out to write for myself).
So bye-bye Meta, hello again to life!
